Q) Who is a Registered Dietitian ?
RD is title awarded to applicants who successfully complete the RD examination conducted annually (mostly in the month of November) by Indian Dietetic Association RD Board
Q) What are the eligibility criteria for writing an RD exam?
Eligibility criteria for RD exam. The candidate must qualify for all of the following:
1. B.Sc. Home Science in Foods & Nutrition. (As day scholar) Compulsory.
2. Also Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics OR M.Sc. in Foods & Nutrition/Dietetics mandatory (as day scholar)
(This is 3 + 1 format where in the candidate must have done a minimum of four years in Home
Science or Foods, Nutrition & Dietetics with a basic degree in Homescience/Nutrition mandatory)
3. a) Post qualification Six months continuous internship (Or 3+3 months)* from recognised hospitals listed on the website (www.idaindia.com)
b) Two year experience in a multispecialty hospital as full time dietician (Clinical portfolio only) in addition to the above 1st two criteria of qualifications.
Q) Is IDA life membership compulsory to write the RD exam?
Yes, candidate who apply for RD Exam should have a life membership of IDA for at least six months before applying for the RD Exam.(February 28th of exam year)
Q) Which are the hospitals recognised to conduct RD internship?
List of recognised hospitals for RD internship is given on the IDA website.
Q) If the internship is done as part of course work, will the candidate be allowed to write the RD exam?
RD Internship should be done separately and not a part of any course work unless RD Board has approved such an internship as per the requirement.
Q) For how long is the internship valid?
RD internship is valid for 5 years only from the date of completion.
Q) What is the percentage marks required to pass the exam?
The candidate needs 50% marks for qualifying, and a minimum of 45% marks in each paper. There will be no re-evaluation of RD exam answer papers.
Q) How many case studies does a candidate need to prepare and how many are to be presented ?
A total of 50 case studies need to be prepared during the internship, out of which 6 cases should be done in detail as per case study format given on website.
Case study presentation : 2 Case studies to be presented for evaluation in presence of jury jury and 4 case studies to be presented in the same hospital.
Q) Is internship done under a dietitian who works in a single speciality clinic / hospital considered under the criteria to write the exam?
No. Only RD board recognized hospitals listed on website.
(Experience of dietitians should include only hospital experience and
not the experience earned from health centers.)
Q) Can internship be done in two different hospitals?
*YES. ( listed hospitals on IDA website only) Single specialty like Diabetes or Kidney— only 3 months of internship can be provided and the other 3 months has to be done in a multi-specialty hospital with a break of not more than 6 weeks between two internships, with competency package as per website.
